One Week Traveling in China - The Scenic Route
One Week Traveling in China - The Scenic Route If youâre teaching abroad in China or elsewhere in Asia, be sure to find the time to travel through China. Earlier, we posted a possible itinerary for exploring Beijing and Shanghai, but thereâs much more to experience in China. Take a look at the following one week travel itinerary of a trip to the Guangxi province of China.Day 1 - GuilinTo begin your trip to China, fly to Guilin. Home to 12 ethnic minorities, Guilin lies amongst lakes, rivers and picturesque limestone karsts. First off, head to Elephant Trunk Hill. The hill with a natural hole has become the symbol of Guilin; a boat tour will get you the best view.Day 2 â" Rice TerracesGet up early and head to the rice terraces of Longsheng, about a 2-hour bus ride from Guilin. Set among small villages, the terraces are an incredible sight year around. In the spring, the flooded paddies resemble scales, giving the ridge its name of the âDragon Backed Mountain.â Hiking through these terraces will give you a stunning view of the rice fields and surrounding hills.Day 3 â" Li River CruiseYouâll have already seen some incredible scenery on this trip, but this river cruise will take your breath away. Boats slowly guide visitors down the Li River, through picturesque hills, rock formations and past scenes illustrating rural life in China. A guide will make the landscape come to life with legendary stories and myths. Once you arrive in Yangshuo, stroll through the small town, enjoy some fabulous food, and explore the night market. If youâre an outdoor enthusiast, consider staying for another day for a bike ride through the scenic countryside or a great climbing excursion.Day 4 â" Travel to Nanning and the Detian WaterfallsYouâll need to travel from Yangshuo to Nanning â" a half-day trip â" in order to make your way to the China-Vietnam border to see the famous Detian Waterfalls (Ban Gioc in Vietnamese). Find a train or bus to Nanning, and spend your afternoon relaxing and enjoying the tropical scen ery at South Lake Park.Day 5 â" Detian WaterfallsThe Detian Waterfall will be worth your travel efforts. The worldâs second largest transnational waterfall flows through three terraces and several scenic routes take you to some beautiful spots. Additionally, visit the border between and Vietnam and China at the 53 Boundary Marker and Cannon Mountain.Day 6 â"BeihaiMake your way to the fastest growing city in the world, Beihai. Itâs well known for its 15 mile long Silver Beach, so make sure youâve packed your swimsuit! The old street in Beihai features colonial buildings, and the Underwater World highlights the areaâs rich marine diversity and Chinaâs naval history. Make sure to try a variety of delicious local seafood for dinner.Day 6 â" Return to GuilinAfter making your way back to Guilin, take time to explore the city. Stroll through the underground markets to pick up any souvenirs, and watch the artificial waterfall in the large city square at night.China, a vast and diverse country, features more incredible sights than visitors can explore on one short trip. You could plan a hundred different travel itineraries through the country, and the best way to see them all is to spend time teaching abroad in China!See also:One week traveling in IndonesiaOne week traveling in Germany Header photo credit: By akiwitz, via FlickrDetian Falls photo credit: By jankgo [CC-BY-2.0], via Wikimedia Commons

Killing the Lazy Stoner
Killing the Lazy Stoner source: www.fanpop.comA group of dangerous drug abusers source: twitter.comDangerous drug user/criminal Lately there has been a monstrous resurgence of pot culture in film and television, I am not even going to bring up music and how much they love it. The revealing of Obamas Choom gang in high school happened; we as a country learned that our commander in chief was most assuredly a blazed out-of-his-mind pothead on the reggie in high school, dude. Its becoming easier to find media where main characters partake in the magic dragon. From Mark Wahlberg hittin the bong over 1,000 times in Ted, to the goofballs in Workaholics, or even little innocent Mr. Frodo (I mean Elijah Wood) ripping the homemade water bottle bong with his dog in FXs Wilfred multiple times an episode. These are just a few examples, but I have a word limit to adhere to so I will not press on. Not only that, but in childrens television shows such as Regular Show, clocks and VCRs in the cartoon commonly have the time 4:20 pictured on them. Pot culture is basically everywhere all over your TV always. There i s no escape. In most of these examples pot is just a funny thing the characters do because they are goofy and weird as it has always been. A few stand out, though. In Wilfred, Elijah Wood plays a burnt out, guilt ridden lawyer who befriends his neighbors dog and smokes weed with him all day. In most shows potheads dont look or behave like Elijah Wood, and they arent lawyers either. In HBOs Bored to Death a 60 year old Ted Danson is the eccentric editor of a large, successful magazine who runs around with Zach Galifianakis and Jason Schwartzman smoking weed and solving crimes. Again we see a character who is successful, lucrative, well respected, an intellectual, and a pot smoker. source: fordopepurposesonly.blogspot.comHe used to be a doctor and now he is just another filthy pot smoking criminal. With marijuana entering the mainstream it is apparent that our collective attitude toward pot in America is drastically distancing itself from traditional thought. It isnt that hard to turn on the TV and find some show where characters, who are well adjusted with no major character faults or problems, use marijuana. Almost like role models, but for stoners. Not that those never existed, maybe youve heard of the Beatles or President Obama, but it is refreshing to see that our cultural attitudes are still something we can malleate. It is high time we amend our feelings toward marijuana whether we like it or not.
Fire Lessons From a Sonoma County Native Dealing With Disaster as a Student
Fire Lessons From a Sonoma County Native Dealing With Disaster as a Student Image via Pixabay Throughout the day and into the week, officials posted fire maps periodically with updated hot spots, but they were hard to interpret amidst the widespread panic pouring through social media. The severity of the fires increased faster than anyone could imagine. After just a few days, the federal government declared the Northern California fires to be a national emergency. The New York Times, NPR, LA Times and other renowned outlets were covering my town like Iâd never seen before. Media-makers and newspapers used phrases like âapocalypticâ and âdevastatingâ to describe the chaos taking place in Sonoma and Napa counties, and videos of my most frequented streets and locations in my little neighborhood resembled full-blown infernos. Historic landmarks were obliterated. The high winds that began these fires late Sunday night into Monday morning continued to exacerbate existing fires (and create new ones) by transporting embers through the air and setting them down in random places. For the past six days, I lived a scenario I called âSchrodingerâs houseâ: I had no idea at times whether my house was still standing or had already burned. I couldnât believe that my best friend of 10+ years and I were having a text message conversation about whether our houses and streets (directly parallel to one another) would be there in the end. When my graduate school classmates at San Jose State University found out I was from Santa Rosa, they cringed and (understandably) offered confused condolences. No one was sure how to help. Not even I was sure how to help my town, my family or myself with a tragedy that nobody predicted to become so severe, much less happen at all. I began to think about how college students might respond to such a serious and unexpected natural disaster. While the phrase âappreciate what you have until itâs goneâ always came across as cliche to me, I really understood it on October 9, 2017. Sonoma County, CAImage via Pixabay Over 10 of my former high school classmates, neighbors, and family friends lost their homes in the past six days, and 2.5-3 hours away from the scene, I watched my town crumble. But this was particularly shocking to deal with as a student. I want to share three takeaways for college students dealing with natural disaster or students across the country who want to support my town and my state in the midst of this devastation: 1. Do not underestimate the power of community For Northern Californians, the catastrophic fires that raged this past week have been perplexing, devastating, and awful at best but they certainly proved that âthe love in the air is stronger than the smoke.â #sonomacountystrong and #wewillrebuild were just a few of the many hashtags that emerged out of this tragedy, uniting strangers across Facebook groups designed to connect residents with resources, donations, evacuation notices, and updates on the status of their homes. Community organizations and restaurants donated meals, entire stores full of product, and shelter to those displaced by the fires. Individuals worked tirelessly on the âSanta Rosa Firestorm Updatesâ group to quell peopleâs unrest and spread information as well as they could. Never had I been prouder of my hometown. Itâs likely that students affected by other tragedies (Hurricane Harvey or Irma, for instance) may be able to relate to these sentiments in some way. College students should remember that the resilience of a community can lift individuals out of a dark place. Never question the potential for neighbors, friends, family, and strangers alike to help each other when disaster strikes. 2. Appreciate the people, not the products When I came across pictures of flame-engulfed houses just minutes away from my motherâs house, I began spiraling into questions: Which documents are in the house that I might need? Will I need to reorder my college diploma? What do I do if I lose the photo albums? All of this was concerning, of course. But the entity of highest value in the house my mother was safe. My message to students? If facing a natural disaster, it makes complete sense to worry about your belongings. As I said to my mother, who for the past week has tried to become okay with either outcome for the house, âeven though you know youâd be okay if it was gone, it would be a lot more convenient for the house to still be there when you get back.â Nonetheless, all you really need is your people. Your friends or family are the most important, in the larger context. 3. Prepare for the unexpected, even if it seems distant or unlikely Sonoma County is accustomed to smaller fires popping up often in Northern California (usually, the further North you travel, the more often fires crop up, since the area is dense with trees). Despite this, my town did not think such a huge firestorm could erupt locally. My mother woke up Sunday night to a text from a friend letting her know there were fires in the area, but because we are so used to smelling smoke from the other fires further north, she went back to sleep. Hours later, as she awoke to the sounds of explosions and neighbors shouting at each other to flee, she realized that disaster was taking place. As college students, we preoccupy ourselves with courses, work, internships, professional development matters, and student organizations. These demands are immediate and routine for us. But we rarely think about what would happen if a fire, earthquake, hurricane, tornado or other storm were to run through our town. âDisaster doesnât discriminate.â It can happen to anyone regardless of whether you believe you are a âgoodâ person, whether you have the money to rebuild, or whether you live in the fanciest neighborhood in town. It happened to me, and it could happen to you; stay grateful, stay resourceful, and stay resilient if it does.

How to Scream Sing Without Hurting Your Vocal Cords
How to Scream Sing Without Hurting Your Vocal Cords Suzy S. Do you love metal, punk, or screamo music? As a vocalist, youll need to take extra precautions if youre singing in these styles. Read on for tips from Austin, TX teacher Gfire M... I live in Austin, Texas, the âlive music capital of the world,â so I have worked with loads of vocalists who sing in touring rock bands. Some of these students only have one section of a song in which they scream others scream for an entire set so I work with them to not hurt their vocal cords. Here are my vocal tips to keep in mind. 1. Breathing Exercises and Vocal Warm-ups No matter what type of singing you do, before you head out on stage, it is a good idea to do some breathing exercises to control your notes and some singing exercises to warm up your entire vocal range, even notes that you donât use on stage. Do these warm-ups for 10-30 minutes and you will be more relaxed and confident for your set. 2. Plan Your Set If you know that one song is really going to be full-on screaming, perhaps plan the next song to be a relatively easy one for you vocally. Obviously, this will not work if your entire set is scream-o. 3. Do Your Cardio and Core Strengthening Training Any type of rock singing tests the physical limits of the vocalist, so it is a good idea to have a workout plan. Cardio exercises increase your lung capacity, and core strengthening gives you more support when you go for those yelled notes. 4. Drink Plenty of Water and Keep Some On Stage In rehearsals, in warm-ups, and on stage, it is essential to keep your vocal instrument hydrated. Either room temperature or warm liquids are ideal for singers and screamers, since cold drinks tend to constrict the throat. 5. Know Your Notes! Even if you are screaming a note in a song, you need to know what note it is so that you can scream in tune. Screaming in tune will help your band sound cohesive it is just as important as tuning the guitar and bass for keeping your sound musical. Plus the added confidence in knowing where to aim your voice is essential for keeping your voice in good shape. 6. Drink Alcohol After Your Set Alcohol is too drying for your voice and will exacerbate any ill effects screaming does to your throat. If you are a drinker, wait until after your set is over. Before and during the set you need to stay hydrated in order for you to scream successfully and consistently. 7. Stay Healthy! Do your best to eat a well-balanced diet and get plenty of sleep. Your body is your instrument, after all! If you need more tips and techniques, you may wish to work with a singing coach who specializes in teaching how to scream sing. He or she can help you develop your screaming technique and personal habits to ensure you a full lifetime of singing and screaming well. Rob Halford of the heavy metal band Judas Priest, for example, studied singing technique and he is able to successfully scream sing after decades of constant touring. Some singers are born to scream so if you are that type of singer, put your vocal care plan into place and plan to scream for a very long time! Gfire teaches music theory, opera voice, piano, singing, and songwriting in Austin, TX. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Music from University of Maryland, as well as her Master of the Science of Singing from Ernest George White Society. Learn more about Gfire here!
